Help Protect Your Skin From the Winter Weather
The cold weather is tough on skin, it means drier skin, due to lower humidity levels and wind, which draws moisture away from your skin. Being indoors in heated rooms can make these conditions worse. Winter weather can cause dry flaky skin, facial redness and even eczema. Exposing your skin to cold temperatures and winter wind can promote and contribute to aging, so it’s important to know how to combat winter weather.

Tips That Can Help Your Skin
You can do more to help reduce redness and chapping other than additional moisture. These tips will help keep your skin healthier and easier to deal with until the sun peeks through the clouds once more.
- Speaking of moisturizer. Pick the best for YOUR skin. The same old, same old may not be the best to combat the cold and dry months. Thicker moisturizer, however, doesn’t necessarily mean better. Stay away from petroleum or oil-based creams if you’re prone to breakouts. For oilier skin, look for lipid containing moisturizers instead. For those with overly dry skin, try an emollient moisturizer that will seal in moisture. And then follow that up with another moisturizer on top!
- Stay away from those long, hot showers or baths. I know they feel great in the winter, but they strip those oils right out of your skin. Instead, use lukewarm, or warm water instead, especially on your face and hands.
- Use sunscreen, it’s not just for summer. That winter sun, combined with the glare off the snow, can really damage your skin. And so can the wind. Sunscreen should be applied to your face and hands 30 minutes before you go outside and reapplied frequently.
- Use Medical Grade Skin Care products. These products have higher levels of ingredients that can help protect and keep your skin healthier during the winter. They can also help heal dry, damaged skin during the cold months.
- Introduce yourself to your skin. Knowing your skin is important, no matter how much sun you get. Examine your skin frequently and now which moles and growths are new, or bigger than before.
- Stay away from tanning beds. They can’t provide enough Vitamin D to help during these short, dark, days and the damage they cause far outweighs any Vitamin D boost you get. Both types of Ultraviolet light (A & B) radiation cause cell damage and lead to skin cancer. For more information on what you need to know about skin cancer, check out the Skin Cancer site.
- If you have lesions that change, bleed, or itch be extra vigilant about watching those. It may be time to call an expert.
- Call an expert. Contact us for a skin consultation. We can analyze your skin and find the best anti-aging treatments and products for your skin!
- Another great investment is seeing a dermatologist. They can analyze your skin type, look for certain problem areas and troubleshoot them earlier than if neglected. A dermatologist can also prescribe medication to address specific conditions you may be experiencing. If you notice any concerning changes to your skin, it’s important to see a dermatologist.
